Heard of habit stacking? It’s basically a simple way to engrain new habits by taking advantage of ones you’ve already created. To us, this is a no-brainer. The more you do something, the stronger and more efficient your neural connections become, creating strong habits like your morning shower, brushing your teeth before bed, or drinking coffee on the way to work. Keen to try habit stacking? Pick an existing habit and link it to a habit you’d like to create. It helps to link tasks that you’d usually do around the same time of day. For example, you could commit to meditating before making your morning cuppa, calling your Mum after dropping the kids at school, or something as small as complimenting or kissing your partner when you get into bed each night. It might not be sexy, but it turns out consistency gets the results. While it’s common for people to indulge in radical stints of training or constantly trying on fad diets, a new study shows that regularly turning up and repeatedly working towards your goals could be more powerful than aiming for perfection. This study looked at two different groups both doing the same workout, but with one group doing it in one hit, once a week. The other group did the exact same number of reps and program as the first group but broke this out over five days. This meant Group 1 did one day of intense training, one day a week for a month, while Group 2 trained moderately five days a week, for a month.
The interesting thing was that significant muscle strength improvement was reported amongst the group that broke the training out consistently over the week, while there was little to no change amongst the one-hit-wonder group. So, next time you feel like you need to run a marathon for it to be effective, remember the power of regular little bursts.
